Remembrance: Marcel Proust
Part #60
Moments from
“Remembrance of Things Past”

“So we don’t believe
that life is beautiful
because we don’t recall it

but if we get a whiff
of a long-forgotten smell
we are suddenly intoxicated

and similarly
we think
we no longer love
the dead
we don’t remember them

but if by chance
we come across an old glove
we burst into tears.”

  1. This is a beautiful quote. It reminds me of my father-in-law who had Alzheimer’s and could not remember his children’s faces, but sometimes there would be a smell or a word or even a breeze that would set off some deep memory that he could not express. This is a quite lovely way of expressing those events. Thank you.

  2. You are welcome. Sense memory is so helpful to trigger a past moment or person. A pleasant recall lost somewhere in time. I am sad to hear about your father-in-law but pleased to hear he was able to have those moments of clarity and recall. It is maddening research hasn’t made advances in all of these problems with the functioning of the mind & body.

I am pleased Proust’s quote recalled these memories for you, also. Sadness w/ a small pinch of happiness mixed in it all.
